Newsletter Business Idea - First Time Homeowner Tips

In a day where everyone is focused on whether Chat GPT will take over the world it may seem a bit old school to recommend someone start a newsletter business. But email works and I’m betting you’ll see more AI focused side hustles and businesses started in 2023 than newsletters so the competition may be a bit lighter.

And newsletters work. Shaun Puri has a great thread here on how he started Milk Road, a newsletter focused on cypto, which was recently sold.

Or take Sam Parr, Shaun’s partner on the uber popular My First Million podcast, he started The Hustle and sold it to Hubspot in a deal worth tens of millions of dollars. In fact, Shaun followed Sam’s blueprint to build the Milk Road.

If you become popular on a channel you’re always at the mercy of the next update or algorithm change. But if you have a newsletter then your content gets delivered directly to your audience.

Now The Hustle and Milk Road followed a blueprint that put out consistent content that was topical and timely in a specific niche. I think there may be a market for a newsletter that is designed to be delivered at a certain time in your life and at a certain pace.

Now most people when they move into their first house or condo do not know everything they need to do. It would be amazing to sign up for a newsletter that had a planned map of content that was delivered from when they first moved into their place and then seasonal content.

For example, it could start off with little tips and tricks. Now I lived in my house for 12 years before an HVAC professional told me to turn my humidifier water line almost off so it only trickled water out. He said it would control the humidity better as it’s not soaking the humidifier every time it turns on and you know what? Less ice on our windows. Wish I knew that before our first winter in the house.

Now imagine a newsletter that’s just super helpful tips for the homeowner. A reminder every three months to change out your air filter. A reminder before winter to turn off your outside taps.

The monetization options for a first homeowner newsletter are pretty wide.

  • Use substack and charge a fee

  • Include affiliate links to local service providers

  • Include affiliate links to products that improve the house (eg. smart thermostat)

  • Sell ads to insurance companies, real estate agents, etc.

The business could also be supplemented by videos on home improvement. Or even a blog with tips that use YouTube videos to show people how to do things.

This format could also be used for other life events. A newsletter for those having their first child, starting college, entering their first corporate gig, etc. So instead of trying to create the next landing page that ties into Chat GPT maybe create a newsletter. It’s made people millionaires before and it will again.
